Well, a horrible headcold temporarily derailed my attempts to successfully complete this challenge. Hopefully the next photographer can kick my butt, as I have un-officially lost already. Here’s to completing the rest of the portrait sessions this week!

I did something radical today.

One of my friends sent me a link to an article that made me cringe. It triggered my fears from my background and childhood. I started to panic and wanted to claw at my skin when I saw the title “guard your heart” and realized the post was in support of this phrase….

dirt (rewrite of an old stream of consciousness)

damp soil

and how the fineness of the powder of the wet dirt

settles into the lines of my hands

which someone once told me meant that I would be affluent with eight children and have a husband at the age of twenty six after firmly establishing my career

and die at the ripe age of seventy eight of natural causes

whats natural about loss other than it happens to everyone

and we lose to death

we lose to misconceptions

we lose to lies

we lose to failure

except in the end

we don’t really lose at all

because how can you lose something that never really belonged to you in the first place?

I’m just borrowing you

and my name

and the soil which grows the basil that I pair with my sliced tomatoes

that I used to really hate and then realized that if I cut out the mushy seed part in the middle it doesn’t provoke so much of a gag reflex

but the soil

which gave nutrients to the basil

which was paired with my sliced tomatoes

are just about as close to the actual taste of pizza that I might ever get now that I know I’m allergic to gluten

but that soil doesn’t smell dirty

when I take in a deep breath of it

from the bottom of my lungs

expanding ribcage

collapsing lungs

collapsing ribcage

because what does dirty mean anyway?

unclean is the obvious answer.

but to think that we associate everything immoral and impure with something that came from the ground

(which is just about as natural and pure as it gets)

sort of baffles me

except when I remember that we came from the ground

from the dust of the ground He created us

and though I was made in His likeness

He knew from the beginning I would mess it up

though there’s nothing wrong with soil

(and the fact of the matter is that it carries the nutrients and the ability

to make life

to make things grow

to produce fruit

beauty

and a home for other creatures

and in that sense in cares

it creates

and in all of its potential

reflects the nature of the creator itself)

we associate it with things that are unclean

because we are unclean

we are from the dust

and when things are left untouched

unmoved

ignored

inactive

they collect dust

and that same grime

that we collect

when we are inactive

stoic

and refuse to move

when we are complacent

we are dust

collecting dust

on top of dust

creating dust

not soil

but dust

because without the living water we are

dry

lifeless

useless

and the fineness of the dust rolls of my fingers

and its not until I immerse them in the mud and the soil

that I’m clean and

damp soil

and the fineness of the powder of the wet dirt

settles into the lines of my hands.

today

i was burdened with the weight

of missing you.

i tried shifting it from one shoulder to the next and then tried to balance it evenly across my back but no matter where i put it, the strain just kept pressing down

and down

i even considered that thing that you always see African women doing, where they put those big ceramic pots on their head

and walk

so gracefully

maybe even carrying two pots under their arms

and a baby swaddled across their chest

but i couldn’t even lift it higher than my shoulders

it was too heavy

its too heavy

and I’m too weak

and i just keep thinking about all the weekends i come home

with that heavy backpack

filled to the brim with books that i never get around to studying

but that i carry with me anyway

and how you never really say anything

about why that bag is so heavy

but every time i’m with you and i reach for it

you effortlessly sling it over your shoulder with one hand

and grab my hand with the other

and we walk

so gracefully

today
